Thank you from the Chairman of The Board

Dear Friends of The Foundation,
It is with great optimism that I ring in the New Year.
As residents and donors we already have our hearts and minds around the joys and beauties of our surroundings and feel tremendous warmth for our new host country; Mexico. We need no convincing about the joys of living and giving here but always hope for the best for our new home.
On this note I am writing this newsletter in the name of Thanks: to thank all of our donors, supporters, volunteers and friends and take a moment to recap on the wondrous things that we all created over the past year in a very bad economy, in a very depressed time for Mexico. WE DID GOOD!
I sense change, positivity toward mass tourism tentatively returning to Mexico, we have heard about new sales, resale’s and good things happening all around. If we managed to achieve the sensational results that we did in 2011, then in an even better economic climate I think the sky will be our limit.

This past year has marked a huge difference in the number of residents who have become involved actively with committees, with volunteer opportunities and who see how badly their help is needed. My hope for the coming year is we can add significantly to this volunteer base and really have the resident community involved with every facet of its life here.
I took on this ominous new role; I thank the Board for their confidence in me, In March 2011. What a wonderful inauguration, a gala dinner at The St Regis no less! I cannot thank enough, personally and on behalf of The Foundation, The St Regis Resort for its generosity and thoughtfulness in helping to plan this great night. We saw tuxedos, ball gowns, fabulous dresses and party outfits but more importantly a very giving audience and a very creative Peter Newton. That evening we launched the Punta Mita sports center project and raise $45,000.00 USD for both the Foundation general funding and The Sports Center specifically.
The Sports center was embraced by many, but most particularly the local communities of Corral del Risco and Emiliano Zapato, who could not believe we were doing this for them. The pride factor during the summer as ground was moved, tress planted, concrete poured was immense locally. Plans were underway to compete with David Beckham and put Punta Mita into the major leagues! So heartwarming to see.
Francisco, our new Sports Centre Coordinator was hired on the eve of his wedding. He was so thankful for the new opportunity and his bride had never even heard of Punta Mita! They are both a wonderful, hardworking, faithful addition to our community. Francisco can be found at the Sports Center every Monday and from Wednesday to Saturday, please pop over and say hello, he is doing a great job.
The Sport Centre committee comprised a number of great players, some of whom will continue to monitor activities. My kudos to Peter Newton, the fearless leader of this great project and of course also to his faithful players; Mary Corroon, Rick Smith, Ken Dahl, John Youden, Charlie Ewell, Bernie McCaffrey, Sharon Siebens. Also to my fellow Board member Juan Pablo Stone who closely associated himself with this project from its initiation.
The Sports Centre is a testament to itself, it is there at the entrance of Punta Mita for all to see, you only have to drive by on any given afternoon/evening to see that is a success in motion. A HUGE feat for such a small community, but established, up and running and self-sustaining. The inaugural event was a warm, fuzzy, goose bump inducing affair with kids and adults of all ages out to enjoy and embrace their community.
“The Angels”; they all fluttered down to Aramara restaurant at The Four Seasons Resort under the celestial leadership of Sharon Siebens, Barbara McGregor, Sandy Howe, Catherine Schmidt, Jane Grad and Claire Newton. This body of beautiful women held a luncheon and raised $8,451.00 USD to inaugurate a nutrition and exercise program to be implemented within the female community of Punta Mita. Ceci Paredes valiantly led a group of local ladies. About 50 women & 319 children had a nutritional & growth evaluation over a period of 3 months; 32 workshops & 16 aerobics classes were held and thoroughly enjoyed. Cooking classes were held, demonstration given and the program found such solid roots that in 2012 our angelic donors will luncheon again to raise the funding for the advancement of this successful program into new villages. The next event will be hosted on March 6th, at Aramara restaurant, Four Seasons resort
One of the highlights of my year to date was the Spanish serenade of an extremely distinguished older gentleman who compared me to the sun, sky and stars (my mother always told me to “beware the Latin man”!) This one certainly caught my attention. He was singing from his wheel chair sitting at a table in the newly constructed Casa de Ancianos. He, along with about 30 of his compadres was eating delicious tamales made by a bevy of elderly, very active local ladies. These are the folk who are enjoying the fruits of this delightful little home, dedicated especially to elders. This is where they get together to meet with officials to fill out social security/medical paperwork, form a co-operative making handicrafts to sell to raise additional income, and meet for pure camaraderie. A lovely project from The Foundation that deserves praise and thanks. Thanks especially to Greg Stanton for his continued and heart felt devotion to this one.
“The Niños”, so important to our society, so important for the growth and future success of this country. We have a passionate Education Committee headed by Beth and Peter Fuller who are working tirelessly with Jane Grad, Greg Stanton, Tamra Koch from Costa Verde International School and Adriana Martín del Campo from PEACE. The established Kinder project is up and running successfully repairs have been done there and materials donated to this program.
Under the guidance of this committed team we also were able to address roof repairs for (elementary schools at Corral del Risco Higuera Blanca and the kindergartens from Corral del Risco & Emiliano Zapata); we also repaired the oldest classroom at the Zapata’s kindergarten.
Play areas were also given a helping hand with the help of Ken Dahl and the Four Seasons, The Foundation worked together with PEACE to plant 150 trees at the schools of the 3 communities.
Working with Costa Verde School in Sayulita we have identified 2 lucky children who now can attend this beautiful, small, school under full scholarship for 2 years and 1 with half scholarship for 2 years.
Please contact anybody on this committee for a guided tour of what we have created to date.

“Clean streets and roads”; a Mexican dream. Huge thanks to one of our greatest friends and true supporters Charlie Ewell, who had this dream and took action to help make it come true. Charlie and all of the valiant gentlemen who participate in the “Guy’s Lunch” deserve our thanks for their continued financial and moral support. As a result we have the road cleaning project in place from La Cruz to Punta Mita. Results can be seen, a difference is being made daily. Due to the generosity of this group The Foundation has been able to underwrite additional continuing environmental support programmes. We have a specific troupe who take an environmental awareness education programme into schools and corporate environs throughout the area. Working with our partners PEACE, we have also initiated “Work for food” and “My footprint” projects. Both are established to build an environmental re-educating process in the surrounding villages and offer up compensation for personal endeavors.
It is not just our streets and roads that we worry about, but also the beautiful beaches and those to whom they are home. At the end of the year we started working closely with the Ecological Group, Manos Unidas por Litibú, a nonprofit organization that has been saving sea turtles at Higuera Blanca for 15 years. We hired a biologist, Andrea Ortiz, in order to help that organization to grow up and improve their tasks.
I want to thank all my fellow board members, Greg Stanton, Juan Carlos Yamin, Ricardo Trueba (treasurer) Paloma Aubach (secretary), Juan Pablo Stone and of course our indefatigable Executive Directors Miguel Angel de la Vega. Sadly last year we had to say goodbye to Miguel but offer up a very warm welcome to Sergio Haro who is our new Executive Director. Sergio is based in The Foundation office in Punta Mita and is already very busy studying the needs of the community and how we will best be able to help in the future. Also a big welcome to the elegant Alicia Aldrete who is Sergio’s assistant and maybe the face you meet first in the Foundation office. A special thanks too to the beautiful, serene Xochitl for all her volunteered help and enthusiasm.
In the advisory capacity we have been extremely lucky to be aided during the year with the expertise and understanding of Charlie Ewell, John Youden and Peter Newton. Huge thanks to all three of them for their deep understanding of the workings of what we do and their foresight into helping us focus on our mission statement and plan our future strategy. This was the group that took the initiative with the Sports Centre Project and put a push on for funding, planning and organizing. Many thanks all round.
All of our on the ground volunteers deserve a massive mention too but more so, Anna Girdner and Cassie Girard, who have championed the cause at my side through thick and thin. Thank you girls for all your hours and sweat and tears.
Our event underwriting partners, whom it would not have been possible to have so much fun without were The St Regis Resort and Haixa Condominium development. Thank you both for your generosity and support. As always the Four Seasons is a partner in many ways.
This coming year will see more changes, both in the structure of the Foundation and how we are fundraising. Many of you have expressed a significant interest in specific projects or specific topics. I feel therefore that small focus group/workshop type fundraisers will be the new direction we take. This gives our donors the opportunity to really get behind and support a cause that is close to them, sit on committees, bring ideas to the table, spend time on the ground volunteering and really becoming more involved with what matters most to you.
This year will most likey not include The March gala. Underwriting has become exteremely difficult to solicit and we have already exhausted our wonderful local sponsors. I am hoping a committee of volunteers will emerge to embrace this event for the coming year and also to plan and organize the November event. All volunteers welcome!
I thank you all, and am sure I may have missed many. If this is the case, I apologize upfront, and hope that you know that we on the Board know who you are. I personally look forward to hearing from new and established residents alike to see how we can all work more closely together to make this “little piece of heaven on earth” more heavenly for more people.
Thank You
Lisa Bruno
Chairman of The Board, Punta De Mita Foundation.

Fabulous New Sports Centre Inauguration and Foundation Fiesta / Kindergarten tree planting

- Punta de Mita Foundation invites to Sports Center inauguration and Foundation´s fiesta!

On November 26, at 3 pm, there will be an opening ceremony at the new Sports Unit public facilities located in the town of Nuevo Corral del Risco. Diverse sports contest activities will be held in which attendants from the community will be invited to participate; food and beverages will be available and all the facilities would be open for the first time for people to visit.

Total investment of this project, executed by the Punta de Mita Foundation, was above two million pesos. 100% of the resources were obtained through private donations thanks to the generosity of diverse residents of Punta de Mita.

Seizing the chance to support the community, the Punta de Mita Foundation, a non-profit civil association, initiated the remodeling project and equipment of the Sports Unit, together with a large number of donors and residents and after consulting with the local judge and the community sports board.

A professional soccer field has been built and subdivided into two smaller fields. Attached is a children soccer court and a soccer sand field. There is a jogging track around the main field, as well as benches for players, bleachers for 300 people, and around 150 trees and plants.

Additionally, a new fence was placed around the perimeter, new boards and paint on the basketball court, renovation of the bathrooms and facilities, and installments of new electrical and hydraulic systems.

The Foundation's commitment to the community and the municipality is to provide the necessary maintenance for at least a period of three years to ensure the sustainability of the project. Additionally, a sports coordinator has already been provided, who in addition to coordinating the field and equipment maintenance, is developing sports training programs for children, youth, and adults, so as to promote the practice of sports and to provide technical tools for teachers, players and users. Permanent access to facilities shall be free of charge for everyone.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

- Local kindergarten parents tree planting initiative

Corral del Risco Kindergarten parents were very excited when they learned that 21 trees were being donated to the kinder by the Dahl family. Many parents came to the kinder on Sunday, October 16th in 96 degree temperatures to help plant. Moms and dads arrived with children, shovels and pics in hand and began digging holes for each one of these trees. The children at the Kinderhave adopted one of the trees as their own. They are responsible for the watering and weeding of their very own tree. With the water problem somewhat taken care of(we still need more electricity) watering these trees is now possible.

In the beginning of this school year parents also came tothe school and prepared the grounds by cutting the grass, weeding, removing debris and unwanted rocks.

What we are experiencing here at the Coral del Risco Kindergarten is that a community is beginning to form. The parents are takingresponsibility for their children’s welfare and betterment. They are working together for the goodness oftheir children and taking pride in all that they accomplish. These parents want their children to be given a chance to make themselves better and it is beginning right here at the Kindergarten in Coral del Risco.

Thank you again to all the fabulous supporters of this project. This is an ongoing project because of the numerous amounts of children who walk through these doors each year. The more educated, caring and responsible children we can put into this community, the stronger this community will become. Because you care - the people of this community are beginning to care.

Thank you again,

Beth and Peter Fuller

- The Sports Center project is underway!

The construction of the Sports Center is approaching its final stage with the following advances:

The leverage of the ground and soil is ready. The grass is completely installed and will be ready soon for initial preventive maintenance

The old wirefence was replaced by a new steel wirefence that will protect the field

Electric installment is advancing and the dreinage system has been working properly with recent rain

Almost all repairs to existing facilities have been done. Around 120 plants and trees have be planted with advice of greenhouse specialists and support from Four Seasons resort volunteers and gardners

We will be working on the repair of the bathrooms and basketball court

Francisco Sánchez, our new Sports Coordinator, is already colaborating with the Foundation to define sports and maintenance programs to work hand in hand with the community in order to promote the practice of sports for all communities groups. We will keep you informed!

- Environmental education initiatives

With support from the Guy´s Lunch group the Foundation Board decided to support two projects focusing on specific community groups:

- Local community groups, workers and buses: "Environmental education in the communities". This project was conceived by Cecilia Paredes, who has developed successful projects in the past such as the Nutrition workshops.

It considers working with high school students to be trained as Environmental Promoters and work in environmental educative activities with diverse local groups such as: workers in hotels, restaurants and constructions; women groups, elders groups and community groups. This activities will be reinforced with a campaign in the public buses with the objective of highlighting the importance of not throwing trash on roads as well as installing garbage bins along the roads.

- School and families "My Footprint" and "Work for food". This are two programs executed by PEACE which deal with environmental education. The first one works with elementary schools in Punta Mita regarding the impact on pollution and all actions that students can take, creating consciousness in elementary students at the communities.

"Work for food" aims at community groups complete town beautification projects and recycling in exchange for food. The Foundation is providing funds to support this two projects which will generate an integral impact on community awareness regarding its own environment.

The Corral Del Risco Kinder graduation was held on Friday, July 8th. It was a huge success. The children looked fabulous and the dancing was precious. As you can see, the children and parents took great pride in this celebration. Seventeen more children now move on to the Primary School on the other side of the fence. It's great they are so close because they are able to come back at the end of the day and get the hugs they need. Their performance results were impressive. Many of the children left being able to write their first name using upper and lower case letters, they know most of the letters in the alphabet along with many of their sounds. These children have an understanding for numbers and the basic applications. The children left with a strong understanding of being respectful to others and the world around them. Good, solid and knowledgeable children have been unleashed into the Corral del Risco community. It is important that we continue to shine the light towards the future.

We had many families from Punta Mita present at the celebration. There was much appreciation given from the children and their parents.

Thank you to everyone who believes that we CAN make a difference in these children's lives.

Big Hugs,

In addition to the pride we take over the impressive educative results the Punta de Mita Foundation has been keeping a close eye in the maintenance of the facilities by providing cleaning supplies as well as stationary materials.

A major leak in the water storage tank at the Kinder left the school without water constantly. This problem has been fixed. Along with it, came the initiative of repairing the bathrooms to provide a follow up to the Hygiene Project and continue the legacy of hygienic habits in the next generations.

Sports Center, groundbreaking day

Sports Center, groundbreaking day

For quite a long time, the residents of Punta de Mita have shared a dream whose aim is to provide a healthy alternative space for the Community.

Along the main road coming into Punta Mita there is a big soccer dirt area next to the parking lot, with four barely noticeable rusted goal posts, a basquetball court in the back and some structure for restrooms and common areas. That space has been the main recreational space for our closest Community and the surrounding areas.

There is an opportunity right now to provide support by improving the facilities. This Friday, July 1st at 10 am, the “cancha” (the field), as it is called by the Community, will witness the official groundbreaking of the new Sports Center. In approximately three months we will be able to enjoy one of the already famous female, children or male tournaments between communities on this renewed field.

It is no longer a dream but a reality that has been possible thanks to: DINE who donated the land to the Municipality so that the ground will be kept permanent for public use; to generous Punta Mita residents, who donated enough resources for this initiative and also to contribute for future operational and maintenance expenses; to the Municipality, who issued all necessary permits and agreed to having the Foundation undertake this project; to the Foundation´s Members of the Board, who provided pro bono advice and support, and finally to the Community itself, which has showed interest and commitment to participate in the operation and sustainability of the facilities. Several suggestions by members of the Community were taken into account and included in the final design, such as: an adjacent children´s field, a water containment tank, bleachers and a walking track.

The Groundbreaking ceremony will be held next to the basketball court by the rear entrance of the facilities. Please feel free to join us!

Each Wednesday evening, two classrooms of the kinder gardens from Corral del Risco and Emiliano Zapata, rejoice of an hour and a half of knowledge, healthy food, didactic- dynamic games and lots of laughs from over 40 different women of divers ages from Punta de Mita (recently we had the privilege of counting amongst us a few Higuera Blanca ladies).

Last mid March started in our communities the Nutrition project, aiming to empower and provide the necessary knowledge to mothers of kinder garden and elementary school students to prepare healthy school breakfast for 4 school kids.
One day a week, two professional nutritionists, Elihud Salazar and Adriana Quintero came from Puerto Vallarta with a car filled with samples of healthy food, stationary products to play didactic games and ready to share the knowledge to prepare healthy recipes for children and families.

More added values came along with this sensitive project. The 471 children from the 2 kinder garden and 2 elementary schools from our communities were evaluated in a nutritional and growth level by 30 students from the Centro Universitario de la Costa, Universidad de Guadalajara, on mid April. 100 recipe books, 50 magnets and 20 food baskets were given to the community ladies as well as the commitment of extending the Nutrition project until June with an extra day a week for aerobics lessons.

We would like to thank the initiative and support of The Angels Luncheon.
Thank you All.

Roof repairs seeking a better learning space

Rainy season is about to start and an important concern arose: Were the schools ready?

Last year floods left Higuera Blanca´s elementary school very damaged. The Government came on its rescue and painted the walls which clearly wasn´t enough.
In Punta de Mita: one classroom from Emiliano Zapata´s Kinder Garden was having serious humidity problems, which were going to cause important leaks during the rains. In its neighbor community, Corral del Risco´s elementary school was about to start having water filtration problems in all its classrooms as well as the kinder garden in its oldest classroom.

Thanks to Jane Grad´s contribution; Juan Pablo Stone´s advice; Agustín Quiñonez´s discount; Fester Material´s guarantee and the Education Committee support, the roofs from those 4 mentioned schools were fixed.

This initiative will provide an adequate learning space for approximately 1200 children for the next 8 years.

<div class="bmc_rightContentImage bmc_image"

This is the first result directly related with funds raised at the March´s Gala Event. The total investment was 13033.898 USD.

Anya Szwajkun is a 7 year old girl who is a first grader in Park City, Utah. Anya is also a resident of Las Palmas, Punta Mita who loves to paddleboard in the area. When Anya visits Punta Mita she enjoys going to the Kinder in Coral del Risco to help out in "centers". Each time Anya would leave the Kinder her heart would be sad. She was amazed that the children did not have many things to play with or create with. During the summer, along with many residents, Anya would come and help in the "Kinder at Risk Project", a project to renew and revitalize the Kinder of Coral del Risco. When Anya went home to get ready for her school year she was also looking forward to her 7th birthday which was in September. One day, she said to her Mom and Dad, that she would like her presents to go to the children at the Kinder in Coral del Risco. So together Anya, her Mom and Dad sent out emails to all her friends requesting that in lieu of gifts for Anya, she would like to help her new friends at the Kinder. She included photos of the school and classrooms and shared her experience from that summer.

She hung pictures of the children and classroom at her party. All of her guests brought gifts for Anya's new friends. The presents included: Puzzles, books in Spanish, blocks, paper, crayons, glues sticks, coloring books, Play doh, doll house, Etch-a-sketch, kitchen supplies and many more arts and craft material. Anya packed up the gifts and brought them to Punta Mita with her in November. She presented the gifts to her friends in person. The kids were very excited and appreciative. What a special and memorable Thanksgiving! All of her friends in Utah loved the idea of helping the Punta Mita community! They received thank you notes with pictures of the kids enjoying their gifts.

Bailey Royer is a young teenager who attends St. Paul's in Westwood California and is also a resident in Las Palmas, Punta Mita where he practices Spear Fishing. Bailey also took part in the "Kinder at Risk project" over the summer. The project inspired him and he started thinking about how he could work with his school's Jamba Juice program to help the children in the Kinder. Jamba Juice partners with Bailey's school and gives all the proceeds to the school and then the school gets to decide how they want to spend it. Bailey helped organize the Jamba Juice sale. They made $500. Bailey then put together a power point presentation about the Kinder at Risk Project in Punta Mita and presented it to the teachers and the student council. He petitioned that the money they earned from the sale would be given to the Kinder in Punta Mita. After some Questions and Answers, the teachers and student council voted to give all the earnings to the Kinder Project.
