These are projects that we would like to begin immediately, through the NPO, P.E.A.C.E.
Both communities lack parks and recreation area and exisiting ones are in poor condition. These are essential for a healthy and vibrant community.
Garabage containers with regular pick-up service are needed, especially in the tourist areas.
This involves many aspects, such as art programs, sports teams, scholarships, environmental education, as well as many programs that are currently being offered by P.E.A.C.E. but need additional funding and support. Educational outcomes would increase dramatically if teachers were equipped with technological training, equipment and support.
Internet access in all local schools. The internet offers a wealth of educational resources that would be immensely beneficial for the teachers and students of this area.
Drug prevention program in all schools The local children and youth need to be aware of the risks and hazards that result from drug use. They also need to be presented with positive, motivating alternatives.
Environmental program With heightened awareness of environmental issues and what can be done about them, local residents can take on the responsibility of beautifying the communities in which they live and reap the benefits that result from that.
Capacity building for local business owners There are many local who have an entrepreneurial spirit and have become small business owners. Their ventures could be more successful with training and education. Additionally, capacity building for new businesses (i.e. eco-turism) would create new jobs.
Day-care Facilities
This is extremely important for the mothers in the communities that want to join the workforce. Many mothers would like to work, but it must either be on a part-time basis and/or with day-care facilities available.
Provide sporting and educational opportunities to migrant workers and local residents on the weekends and evenings. Through these events and classes the community and individuals increase their knowledge, self worth and sense of community. This will help diminish the problems that come with drug and alcohol abuse by providing alternative ways to spend free time.
These are projects that are considered important but will take considerable planning and funding. The Punta de Mita Foundation would like to be involved in assisting with financing to homeowners and business owners in this area and providing grants for those who follow the architectural guidelines established.
There is a supply of potential workers in the area and definitely a demand for trained people in the hospitality industry. This includes maids, waiters, security, maintenance, gardening and management. These services are needed by the hotels, condo developments, homes and restaurants in the area. Training would also involve basic English.
There is an existing health care center in Emiliano Zapata with a caring staff. However, they have great needs regarding the infrastructure of the clinic and supplies.
