Welcome to Punta de Mita Foundation

Health

For 2010 we are committed to continue with those programs that were initiated in 2009 such as our Hygiene Project in partnership with Children Shelter of Hope Foundation, Afterschool and Community Pride programs in partnership with PEACE and a recycling with Rivera Recicla.  But we also want to expand our efforts by developing the projects described in the following paragraphs.  All of them are priorities for the communities we support, we are confident that the generosity of everyone in the area will allow us to become these dreams a reality.  You can also download our 2010 catalogue of projects where you can find more information

Hygiene Project

In 2009 in the midst of the influenza breakout we decided to contribute to this amazing project consisting of three different components which impact the health and hygienic conditions for children. The project took place at the five public schools in the area Corral del Risco (Kinder Garden and Primary School) and Emiliano Zapata (Kinder Garden, Primary and Middle School).

  1. Restrooms remodeling. Renovating and remodeling all restrooms at public schools in the area was a priority. Water pumps, electricity, toilets, sinks and accessories were fixed or restored according to the needs of the schools.
  2. Maintenance. Providing basic cleaning supplies and staff to keep the facilities clean was the second step. The sustainability of the project relied on cleanliness in the restrooms. Ongoing supplies and support staff dedicated to maintaining the restroom facilities are being provided.
  3. Education. Parental educational meetings as well were given as were hygiene classes to children, where the importance of establishing routines and maintaining good hygiene practices were highlighted. Signs for bathrooms were done in English and Spanish in order to educate and remind the kids to flush the toilet, wash their hands and not to waste water.

The results of this project were observed in the improved health habits as a result of experiencing cleaner restroom spaces and also participation in discussions about improved health and hygiene practices at school and home. A total of 630 children benefitted from the project plus all their families and teachers as indirect beneficiaries.  We were so pleased with the results that for this year we have expanded and continue the project.

Parental educational meetings have been reinforced and we are going beyong keeping bathrooms clean and functioning, we are making them a nicer place.  Beautification of all facilities is taking place so by the next school year that will begin by end of August children and teenagers will experience a nicer environment and the responsibility of maintinng the facilities!!

Health Clinic

Public health and social services only reach 33% of the population in the area. There is only one existing health care center in Emiliano Zapata with a caring staff. However, they have great needs regarding the infrastructure of the clinic and supplies.  The Foundation is looking for partners and donors interested in supporting the creation of a Health Clinic, if you are interested please send and email to info@puntademitafoundation.org
